Journal Entry #1

 

 Its 1963, my name is Mitch Belville, and i am 56 years old. I have 3 sons, (Thomas, 18; James,17; and Jonathan,15), one daughter,Mary Jane,13, and a beautiful wife. We all live in Aurora, Ohio. My family is the most important thing to me and i hope and pray the Vietnam conflict wont involve any of them. Im hoping the talk ofthe draft is just a made up exaggeration. Kennedy is now president and with the Vietcong uprising, the draft seems more and more immenent.

Journal Entry #2

 

 i was reading the paper this morning, before taking my sons off to basic training. it shows a cartoon of communism trying to push down the dominos labeled as different countries that could potentially fall to communism but thanks to the U.S. soldier, we are keeping them standing. i find this cartoon to be very pursuasive because it shows that all of these countries could possilbly fall to bad governments and we are sent over to stop this.and i know our military wont let any more countries fall to this new reign of government. the Geneva Peace Confrence helped with this earlier when vietnam was split into two. its not a war we are fighting, its communism we are preventiong. the vietcong are the ones that are droned by their government to fight us off. and my sons, now both part of the combat troops, are sent to fight them because we have different beleifs than them. 
 

Journal Entry #3

Vietnam Song-  

 The song Sounds of Silence by Simon & Garfunkel is about what the world is coming to with the vietnam conflict. I heard the song and it reminded my of a more peaceful time when there were no worries. a line in the song states "my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light." This shows that we make our own battles and have to fight our own wars but it still hurts people to know that we have to do this and its shocking to know what is really going on where both if my son's are.
  Journal Entry#4- its may 6th, 1970. A lot of people were affected by the war, doves of the war are protesting it and hawks are against them. In Kent the other day, a few students were shot down by military police form protesting. some of them were friends of my friends and people my sons went to school with. my wife, daughter, and i continue praying for the madness to end.

Terms.

Ho Chi Minh- Leader of revolution in Vietnam. North Vietnam leader. he is the reason that vietnam is communist.

 

 
Vietminh- Army made by Ho Chi Minh. they defeated the south easily.

 

 

Geneva Accords- 1954-Ceasfire of South Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. this didnt last long, the north attacked 3 months after.

 

 
Vietcong- Communist guerilla forces. Supported by North Vietnam. they held many suprise attacks in the jungles.

 

 
Ngo Dinh Diem- Domocratic, Christian, president of South Vietnam. Very Corrupt. Also Assassinated. he should have led the south much better.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Journal Entry #6- Reflection of War.        
Its 1975,  both of my sons are home safe now. im happy my family has nothing to do with foreign countries, fighting, and death anymore. South Vietnam is taken over by North, spread of Communism is sure to come. we can only wait.
